Apple Watch

Apple is working on transforming its Apple Watch into a wearable AI device. Despite the challenges AI devices face in the market, Apple is reportedly aiming to equip the Apple Watch with cameras that will enable the expansion of its “visual intelligence” features. These features are currently only available on the latest iPhone models.

The plan is to integrate cameras into both the Apple Watch Series and Ultra models. The Series version is expected to feature a camera built into the display, while the Ultra model will have a camera positioned on the side. These cameras would allow the watch to use Apple’s visual intelligence tools, which include functions like identifying objects and translating text from images.

AI Features and Real-Time Translation

One of the most practical applications for AI in wearable devices is real-time translation, which has long been considered a useful feature. Since the Apple Watch has a functional purpose beyond just serving as an AI novelty device—unlike some competitors—it could be an ideal platform for introducing AI features. This integration would also help Apple gather more data to train its AI systems.

The Success of AI Wearables in Other Markets

Meta’s success with its Ray-Ban smartglasses, which reportedly sold over a million pairs, shows that there is potential for AI-powered wearables, especially when they serve a practical purpose. This could open a path for the AI wearable market when combined with functional technology.

Apple’s Struggles with AI and Watch Development

Despite its efforts, Apple has faced difficulties with implementing AI features. The company delayed the rollout оf a smarter Siri because the technology wasn’t working as expected. Furthermore, many users have expressed dissatisfaction with Apple’s existing AI features, with surveys showing that 73% оf iPhone owners felt the AI features added little tо nо value.

Additionally, Apple has struggled tо expand the functionality оf the Apple Watch. The much-anticipated blood-pressure tracking feature has been delayed, and the company іs reportedly planning tо discontinue the plastic version оf the Apple Watch SE, which was designed tо make the device more affordable.

Can a Camera Fix Apple’s Challenges?

While the inclusion of a camera could potentially help Apple overcome some of these challenges, it might also complicate a device that is best known for its primary function of telling time. It remains to be seen whether the addition of AI features and cameras will help Apple succeed in the wearable AI market or simply add unnecessary complexity.
