Wireless Charging

I’ve been using the OnePlus 13 for about a month, and it’s quickly become my favorite Android smartphone. Alongside great battery life, fast charging, and an excellent camera, one standout feature I wish every phone had is the 50W AirVOOC Wireless Charging.

Solving Wireless Charging Heat Issues

A common problem with wireless charging is excess heat. The new AirVOOC charger fixes this with a built-in fan, keeping the phone cool even after an hour of charging. It also provides faster wireless charging speeds than most wired chargers in the US.

The AirVOOC Magnetic Wireless Charger

The OnePlus 13 doesn’t natively support magnetic charging, requiring a separate $25 magnetic case. The AirVOOC charger itself costs $80, and a compatible charging puck and cable add $50, bringing the total to $155 for full-speed wireless charging.

Unlike the 2020 OnePlus 8 Pro charging stand, this charger has a puck-like design. The benefit is easy alignment with magnets in the case, similar to MagSafe for iPhones. However, the downside is that the built-in fan prevents propping the phone up while charging.

Testing Wireless Charging Speeds

Using the 80W wired charger, the OnePlus 13 charges fully in 39 minutes on average. With the 50W AirVOOC wireless charger, OnePlus claims a 75-minute full charge, though my tests showed slightly faster results.

However, restricting the fan’s airflow by laying the phone flat significantly slows down charging. In one test, it reached only 32% in an hour when laid flat but charged fully in 45 minutes when propped up.

Does It Work with the iPhone 16 Pro?

While designed for OnePlus and OPPO devices, AirVOOC supports Qi wireless charging, making it compatible with other phones, including the iPhone 16 Pro. However, charging the iPhone was much slower—taking three to four hours to fully charge, depending on placement. That said, the charger effectively kept the iPhone cool, preventing overheating.

Why Every Phone Maker Should Copy This Feature

With Qi2 wireless charging rolling out, more phones will feature built-in magnets, making AirVOOC-style charging more viable. However, most devices currently support only 25W wireless charging, half the speed of OnePlus’ solution.

If more manufacturers adopted full-speed AirVOOC technology, it would bring significantly faster wireless charging to all smartphones.

Final Verdict

The OnePlus AirVOOC charger is a game-changer, but its design could be improved to prevent slow charging when placed fan-side down. Despite this, it offers speeds comparable to wired charging and keeps devices cool. At $105+, it’s not cheap, but it’s a worthwhile accessory for OnePlus users and a feature all phone makers should embrace.
